Anxiety arises when life presents us with many unexpected events. Anxiety is created from anticipation from the dreaded what if syndrome. Anxiety surfaces by way of psychological, physiological, and behavioral symptoms. On a psychological level feelings of worry, fear, uneasiness seem to take over. Many people experience the physiological indications on varying levels which include, increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, tension, sweating, and various other physical sensations in the body. Behaviorally we see fear of being placed in certain situations, avoidance, and the inability to regulate resulting in panic attacks. Through anxiety therapy we can address many of these symptoms and manifestations.
Please note it is healthy to have some level of anxiety. Anxiety is an internal motivator for the body. However, when anxiety is at high levels the body becomes deregulated, at this point, anxiety becomes an inhibitor to the individual.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th Ed., Text Revision) Anxiety Disorders are broken down into several categories including:
ANXIETY IS GREATLY INFLUENCED BY A PERSON’S EXTERNAL FACTORS WHICH INCLUDE:
Stress around personal relationships/family
Worry from a medical illness
Physical/emotional trauma
Stress from work/school
Substance use/abuse
Financial Stress
Side effect of medications
