STRESS COUNSELING FOR ADULTS & TEENS

It is almost a way of living to constantly push ourselves to do more, and it is no wonder more and more research supports that over 90% of all medical conditions can be traced back to stress in our bodies. Through stress counseling we can eliminate some of the physical, mental and emotional challenges that come along with stress.

When our bodies are under consistent amount of stress we may see the negative effects that stress can have on our bodies. These symptoms include:

Headaches

Upset Stomach

Back & neck pain

Changes in eating & sleeping patterns

Susceptibility to depression & anxiety

Weakened immune system

When left untreated, stress can cause a number of health conditions may arise overtime.

STRESS COUNSELING FOR CHILDREN

Too often we fail to understand how children are impacted by stress. Children may be experiencing stress and not have the language skills to express what is happening to them. Areas of stressors may include:

Family conflict, separation, divorce, or death

School: problems with peers, bullying, schoolwork or homework

Life transitions: new school, moving, etc.

Environmental, i.e. natural disasters

Along with eating balanced meals, getting the proper amount of sleep, and daily exercise here’s a few more strategies to help your child calm themselves in times of stress.

  • DEEP BREATHING

1.) Slowly breathe in through your nose

    2.) Hold for three counts

3.) Exhale through your mouth while counting to six

    4.) Repeat eight times

  • GET MOVING!

Shake out your body. In a fun and silly manner shake out your hands, arms, and legs…be silly and have fun. Movement is the fastest ways to shift energy in the body.

Laughter is excellent medicine for reducing stress.

Stretch. Stretching each muscle group in the body is an excellent way of reducing tension.

  • PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION (PMR)

Tighten each muscle group as you breathe in…hold for 10 seconds and then release your breath as you relax your muscles. Work up your body starting with your feet and ending at your head.

  • MASSAGE

Massage your neck and shoulders. Gently massage neck and/or shoulders where most stress gets stored in the body.

  • MEDITATION

Check out the meditation books for children by Maureen Garth for some great guided visualizations.
