ADVANTAGES OF INDIVIDUAL THERAPY VS GROUP

Feb 02, 2023

Which is better, Individual Therapy or working with a Group? What are the advantages of Individual Therapy?

There are many reasons people seek out the support of a therapist. Participating in regular therapy with a trained professional can provide an individual with a safe space to address depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, chronic pain, and many other life struggles.

Adult, adolescent, and child therapy can be done at our DTC office, one-one-one, between the individual and an experienced professional. However, therapy can also be conducted in a group setting with two or more receiving support at the same time.

WHICH HAS MORE ADVANTAGES, INDIVIDUAL THERAPY OR A GROUP?

There are advantages to both. Whether Individual Therapy or in a group setting, it truly depends on your preference, needs, and circumstances.

WHAT ARE ADVANTAGES OF INDIVIDUAL THERAPY?
  • Personalized treatment. Therapy is unique to you and your specific goals, leading to an individualized and focused experience. Group sessions may follow a workbook or lesson plan that may or may not apply specifically to your circumstances.
  • Fewer distractions. If you believe you may be thrown off course by what others share, Individual Therapy may be more beneficial for you.
  • Greater schedule flexibility. You can schedule a day and time that is convenient for you or change your appointments from one week to the next. Group sessions often occur on a pre-set day and time and sessions take place regardless of your attendance.
  • Less intimidating. Opening up to one person may be easier for you, thereby allowing you to make progress more quickly.
  • Move at your own pace.
  •  You can go faster or slower. And your therapist will nudge you forward…or not. It’s all based on your preferences discussed with your therapist.
WHAT ARE ADVANTAGES OF A GROUP?
  • Less intimidating. Being one of many might feel more comfortable for some than sitting one-on-one with an individual therapist.
  • Contribution of many. You have the opportunity to receive opinions and feedback from multiple individuals, which may help you on your journey.
  • Improve communication skills. Group work may become a great way to break out of your shell and speak more in front of a group.
  • Camaraderie. Realizing others share similar experiences can go a long way to feeling less isolated.
  • Cost efficient. The session fee is shared across the group, and therefore may be more affordable per session.
